Our beloved Tommy passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family; his devoted parents Catherine and the late Albert Vallen and his loving brothers and sisters; Michael (Kathy) Vallen, Margaret Vallen (Jack Hobbs), Robert (Colleen) Vallen, Kathy (Tom) Taylor, Albert (Kim) Vallen, Kevin (Janine) Vallen and Dan (Lisa) Vallen. Nineteen nieces and nephews and Great niece and nephews. Forty nine years ago it was unclear what a Down’s Syndrome child would be able to achieve. Through the perseverance of his parents, Tommy went to school at 6 months old. His sense of determination and work ethic began as a toddler. He finally walked at the age of 3 and began to read and write. He loved his friends at school and on the field. He played soccer, baseball, golf and enjoyed bowling especially with his family at Laurel Lanes. At his high school graduation at the age of 21 he read the class speech. After graduation he worked at the Occupational Training Company. He looked forward to work and took his job very seriously for 18 years. What Tommy loved most in the world was his amazing Mother and Father and spending time with his large family in Maple Shade and Stone Harbor NJ where he loved the ocean, mini golf and flying kites. He loved Sesame Street, church on Sunday, swimming in his pool, riding his bike and playing his drums. Tommy loved life and each day his cheery smile and friendly personality touched someone in a positive manner. He has taught us to see the joy in simple things in life and to remember how blessed we are to have our health and each other. The medals Tommy won at the Special Olympics will always remind us of his zest for life. Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday March 7th from 9-10:45 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, 236 East Main Street, Maple Shade, New Jersey 08052.
